Honeybees

The managed honeybee vanishes from hives and fields. Other pollinators remain, but the mobile workforce agriculture rents by the truckload is suddenly gone.

01Overview

Honeybees are not the only pollinators. Wild bees, flies, moths, butterflies, beetles, birds, and bats remain in this scenario. Wheat, rice, and maize also reproduce without animal pollination. The world would not lose three quarters of its food overnight.

What disappears is the most widely managed and transportable pollination service: colonies that growers position in orchards and fields at flowering time. The loss concentrates in fruits, nuts, seeds, vegetables, and forage crops that make diets diverse rather than merely caloric.

02The missing agricultural workforce

Commercial pollination contracts would become impossible immediately. Almonds, apples, berries, melons, and seed crops would face lower or less reliable yields while growers compete for scarce alternatives: wild-pollinator habitat, hand pollination, mechanical systems, or different crops.

Honey and beeswax markets disappear too, along with beekeeping income and businesses that breed queens, move hives, and manufacture equipment. Food prices would reflect labor-intensive substitution long before ecosystems could adjust.

03Policy moves into the field

Governments would have to treat pollinator habitat as production infrastructure. Pesticide rules, field margins, flowering corridors, and incentives for diversified farms would become food-security policy rather than mainly conservation policy.

Countries with large managed-pollination industries would face pressure to subsidize hand labor and research. Trade disputes would follow as pollinator-dependent exports contract unevenly.

04Calories survive; nutrition narrows

Staple calories remain, but many foods rich in vitamins, oils, and micronutrients become scarcer or more expensive. The result is not universal starvation by the next morning; it is a diet that becomes cheaper in starch and more expensive in diversity.

The burden falls hardest on households already unable to absorb price increases. Small farmers also lose the yield insurance that a healthy mix of managed and wild pollinators provides.

05A quieter landscape

Honey appears in medicine, ritual, confectionery, fermented drinks, and language across civilizations. Bees symbolize work, order, royalty, and collective life. The empty hive would be an economic fact and a cultural wound at once.

Agricultural landscapes would change visually as pollinator-dependent crops retreat and flowering periods no longer summon the familiar movement of managed colonies.

06Colony losses as rehearsal

Modern beekeeping has already experienced severe regional colony losses from parasites, disease, pesticide exposure, habitat loss, and climate stress. Those episodes did not remove all honeybees, but they showed how rapidly growers can face pollination shortages and higher hive-rental costs.

They also showed the limit of treating honeybees as a complete substitute for biodiversity: resilient pollination depends on many species, not one managed animal.
